What is Hatha Yoga?

Classical Hatha yoga was developed in the 15th century and is the foundation for most yoga practices with continuous evolution to the different varieties and schools of practice today.

Hatha is the yoga of force as the practice focuses on building strength, alignment, and flexibility in the body through held postures and sequences. It also integrates breathing techniques, meditation, and relaxation, which elevates the practice to more than an exercise class. Yoga is about developing self-awareness, inviting you to look inwardly, to take time for yourself and not compare to others.

My adult classes are suitable for beginners and upwards and I teach all students with encouragement, inclusivity, and an element of light-heartedness.

We are all different, so by closely observing an individuals’ areas of strengths and weaknesses I can support them with modifications to most poses and encourage everyone to go at their own pace and with time, to steadily improve.

For example, if a student has an injury or physical limitation, I work with them to develop their practice gradually, to enable them to deepen their range of movement and understanding of their own bodies as well as offering suggestions and tips for home practice.

Whether they work at a desk all day, stand, or do something physically demanding, I can advise on simple poses to practice anywhere so that yoga easily slotted into the day.

My aim in teaching is not just about promoting strength and flexibility in the physical body but a holistic approach to overall wellbeing, where both the mind and body are balanced harmoniously. Regular yoga practice has been proven to reduce stress, calm the nervous system and promote feelings of well-being and balance.
